Spalted Maple Shift Knob
Spalted Maple Shift Knob
This is a Spalted Maple Ball, stabilized in black resin. The spalting is subtle, but is really highlited when the sun hits it.
The process:
Wood is hand selected to have character and potential to create a beautiful knob.
Most woods are then stabilized (unless they are already very dense, such as walnut). This process requires a vacuum to be pulled on the wood for 1-3 days, and then soak in resin for 3-5 days before being oven cured.
The process of stabilizing makes the wood very dense, and less susceptible to issues that raw woods face, such as cracking and chipping.
The knob is then tapped to fit our custom billet aluminum insert.
The knob then is turned on the lathe and sanded to 2000 grit and polished to give it the shine that you see.
Once sold, a billet aluminum insert will be tapped to match your specific thread pitch.
